Toughening modification for PS is mainly realized via copolymerization and blending approaches. High‑impact polystyrene (HIPS) is the typical representative of copolymerization modification. Rubber such as polybutadiene is polymerized within styrene monomers to form sea‑island morphology. Rubber particles serve as stress concentrators to absorb massive impact energy, raising impact strength by several‑fold or even dozens‑fold. Blending modification achieves toughening effect by mixing PS with flexible polymers including SBS elastomer, PE and PP. Compatibilizers are usually required to optimize interfacial bonding force.
Main Applications
HIPS is the most widely‑used toughened‑PS grade. It is extensively manufactured into home‑appliance housings for TVs, air‑conditioners and vacuum cleaners, office‑equipment components, food‑packaging articles such as yogurt cups and disposable tableware, toys and medical‑device shells.
